stop listening to the smiths? no thanks i don't think i will.

so i got hired at colleen's, this local coffee shop near my house. officially. kind of. also illegally. it looks like it's going to be an under-the-table thing. it's very casual...too casual? there's no application, no working papers involved, no training [sorry christophe, it doesn't look like i'll be teaching you the finer points of espresso making after all], no set hours, and...no set wages. i have no idea what i'll be paid, but because it's under-the-table it could be anything. the upside of all this is no taxes on what i make.

so i'm not really sure what to do. do i take the job? it's really awkward trying to talk to them about it, because it's not like they came out and said "we're paying you under-the-table" they didn't say much of anything, besides "start coming in saturday april 30th." i was the one who asked "workingpapers/application/training/um...?" and she just said "i haven't heard of doing anything like that." oh dear.

and i want more birthdays! everyone! i have 41 friends and only 16 have told me their date of birth. and you lurkers too, even if you read my livejournal and you think i don't know.

i went to mexico the first week of spring break. it was amazing. i felt just awful for not speaking any spanish. all i could say was "good morning/afternoon/evening" "where are my pants" "i'm pregnant" "what's your name" and [possibly the most useful phrase]

i love riding aeroplanes.

[my city is still breathing, but barely it's true...]

i tried to talk to the people city next to me, i really did. clearly, they were not very interested:

we stayed there for a few days, that was splendid.

the maids folded my towel in the shape of an elephant!

there were a lot of wild/stray dogs, we stopped at this 7/11 and i helped a man feed pieces of hot dogs to them.

we stopped at the tulum ruins on our way out of akumal

we spent the majority of the week there. it was this little fishing town near the coast of belize.

i let them use my camera, this is what happened:

the owners of the villas [robert&margo] where we stayed were really excellent, they were an american couple from seatle. robert had all these amazing collections. one of them was "things that are round"

those all washed up on the beach from old cruise ships. try to guess what they are.

we stopped in the town of tulum on the way back to cancun-

those cards were everywhere, i'm not sure what they are. i bought a bag with the watermelon on it. i also fell in love with a teacup. a 400 pesos teacup. needless to say, it did not end up coming home with me.

grace hated the ruins. she did not know i took that picture. she called them "dumb piles of rocks." i didn't mind them. but i really liked this tree.

then cancun

that's the only picture i took in cancun. i think it was the only thing i liked in cancun too.

on the plane ride home i talked to a nice german man. at the end of our conversation i found out that he works for a company that "dabbles in chemical warfare." charming.

things i learned in mexico:
1. you know you have the right amount of leisure time when you can read an entire book in one day
2. pineapple pizza is good. pineapple and mango pizza is better.
3. digital cameras do not like sand
4. snorkel mask marks make me look severe
5. your mom will not get mad if you ask for a sip of her mexican beer. she will get mad if you don't make a disgusted face afterward.
6. outgoing waiters are good. drunken waiters are better.
7. when snorkeling, it's best to take the plastic inserts out of your flippers before using them
8. next time you shouldn't make your parents aware of the fact that your 11-year-old sister's daiquiri is not virgin
9. [mexican] coke gives you a sugar high, [mexican] "coke light" gives you a UTI [i didn't learn either of those from personal experience]
10. mom likes margaritas. a lot.
11. after a few of those margaritas, she does a surprisingly accurate impression of SNL's "schwetty balls" spoof on NPR
12. mexican beverages have funny names, like "yomi lala"
13. what's more funny is to see my dad drinking them
14. sharpie writes on everything. except coconuts.
